NOUS

Nous: A study on mathematical order and luminous architecture.

Year: 2013
Location: Giardino Irene Brin, Rome, Italy
Role: Lead Designer
Type: Proposal / Luminous Installation  Research
Status: Unbuilt

Nous is an eight-cubic-meter (283-cubic-foot) monolith: a primary geometric presence within the landscape. Its surface, precision-milled with quasi-crystalline arabesque patterns, operates as a permeable membrane through which light is structured and space is redefined.

By day, the cube stands as a silent, rational volume. By night, an internal light source activates the lattice, projecting a field of shadows that extends the structure beyond its physical limits. Solid becomes filter. Light becomes architecture. The cube dissolves into its own projection.

Technical Statement

1. Modularity and Logistics

Designed as a modular assembly system, the monolith is composed of independent panels that allow for complete disassembly and efficient transport. This structural logic minimizes logistical impact and enables the installation to be deployed in diverse environmental contexts without permanent site alteration.

2. Environmental Dialogue

Specifically sited to interact with the organic canopy, the work establishes a dynamic dialogue with its surroundings. At night, the projection of quasi-crystalline shadows creates a visual superposition between the rational, artificial geometry of the lattice and the irregular geometry of the forest, blurring the boundaries between the architectural object and the natural environment.

3. Fabrication Intelligence

The project serves as a case study in structural subtraction. It investigates the limits of material integrity by calculating the maximum amount of mass that can be removed through CNC milling without compromising the stability of the volume. The resulting lattice is a performance-driven solution that maintains monolithic stability while maximizing light permeability.
